Google's "Wonder Wheel", and how it can help you. PDF Print E-mail

wonder_wheel3In this menu click on "Wonder Wheel", and you'll get a 2 dimensional Wheel of related terms appearing to the left of the search results on the page (but confusingly shown on the right here!). Now, each of these search terms are things that Google considers to be closely related to the central search term, which is very handy for finding good keywords to use in pages you're looking to rank for that term. It's also handy for generating keyword ideas for parked pages.

As you click on the terms at the ends of the Wheel's spokes, a new Wheel appears, attached to your original terms, and alongside it are the Google search results for the new term. In this way you can quickly jump from topic to topic in a way that's quite different and much, much faster than a normal Google search. You can see below how I got from Twitter to "flights to athens" in 3 clicks (one for each new wonder wheel).wonder_wheel5
Ok, so that's how it works... but what can you use it for? Well, I'm not going to go into it in depth, but here are a few basic  ideas to start you off:
  1. Finding ideas for related keywords for parked domain names. Eg, if you had a football related name, then "Flights to Athens" could well have been good keywords to try.
  2. Finding related subjects to round out a blog or project article.
  3. Since the Wonder Wheel spokes are the subjects that Google feels are related to the main term, using these terms in your content will help produce more Search friendly pages.
  4. General searching - I'm not sure about you - but any technique that lets me browse the internet better or in a new way is always going to be a good thing and very welcome.
  5. Basic stuff like gift ideas, blog ideas or ideas for.....? Well  - try typing in Mother's day, beach holidays or something completely different and see what you come up with.
