Hi, I'm Ty Hancocks - author of Interacted.com.
After doing a Masters in Science Journalism at Imperial College in London, I started my career at BBC Television, working as part of the production team on the BBC1 science program "Tomorrow's World". In total I stayed at the BBC for 7 years, working on a wide range of programs, ending up as the Senior Producer in charge of the BBC's Interactive Television Sports coverage.
I was lucky enough to win a BAFTA Award for my Interactive TV coverage of Wimbledon and the British Open Golf in 2000, before leaving the BBC later on that year to establish my first business, First Production.
Working in interactive TV from 1995 to 2000 meant that I saw the early effects of the internet on broadcasting, and I was also involved in the early trials for broadband services that were being run by various telecoms companies in partnership with the BBC. As a result of this I had started domaining early in 1999, buying and selling a number of domains before the bubble burst in 2001. I retained a portfolio of around 1000 names, which seemed the right thing to do as registration costs were plummeting at the time from the old Netsol fees of $35 per year.
Between 2000 and 2006 First Production produced a wide range of programmes for BBC, ITV, SKY and Channels 4 & 5, as well as producing a wide range of video based training material for the corporate sector. First Production was also the television consultant to the Royal Court of Bahrain during their successful bid to win the right to host and televise the Formula 1 Grand Prix Event in Bahrain - fighting off stiff competition from a host of countries worldwide. In 2006 First Production sold the rights to it's back catalog of training material, effectively freeing me up and giving me the time and money to pick up the reins of the domain game again.
Domaining had remained a background interest until that point, although I'd registered a few names along the way too, but it was in 2006 that I started looking into properly monetizing the domain portfolio I'd been hanging on to since 1999-2000 - which lead to a renewed interest in the area - and it was also clear that things had moved on a lot. Today my portfolio runs to around 4000 domains and counting - although only time will tell as to the eventual value of the collection!
In today's market, I personally think that IDNs offer the best possible value for anyone interested in domaining - as it's possible to pick up single word .coms in major languages that return 10 million + EXACT Google matches for registration fee.... if you're willing to put the time and effort in.
My best buy so far? It's gotta be Chianti.com bought on the drop in 2003 for the Snapnames reg fee (maybe $50? I forget), which sold for $28,500 at a GreatDomains.com auction in May 2008. Nice work if you can get it.
